A5 Valuing culture and family

Valuing culture and family is a core principle of the New Zealand curriculum.  I embrace this and encourage students to be proud of who they are, where they are from and their whanau.

Ka Hikitia also outlines the need to celebrate and embrace cultural identity and that this plays a key role in student well-being and achievement.

The evidence below shows how I embraced the student's connections to whanau and helped them proudly share their whakapapa. We researched and learned our mihi in preparation for our Marae stay and then parents helped run the workshops at camp.

This student's mother explained to me that he had actually learned two different mihi,  one for her side of the family and one for his father's side. She said that there were a lot of really nice discussions about their family and where they represent during this learning.




In the video below a student describes how proud he was that his Dad (who can not usually attend school events) taught our class to use taiaha.
