A4 Diverse learners learning in a way that suits their needs.

I embrace the differences that all of my colleagues and students bring with them. I demonstrate an understanding that every learner in my class has different needs and plan to meet these and give them every chance to achieve better learning outcomes.

A student in my class with an Indian family had recently gained New Zealand citizenship. I embraced this and celebrated with the class and student, developing it as a learning opportunity. The student's writing goal was to use a broader range of vocabulary when writing so it fitted perfectly.

We used the event to educate our community, the student made a video to share the process.

Afterwards the student wrote a recount and used an online tool to share her experience. I know that her family and her were very proud and excited to be sharing this experience with our community. Because this student had a connection to this authentic context she was able to use a wider vocabulary in her learning than she would normally. This event was the catalyst for some great learning.

Below is an email the student's mother sent me with some more photos, we showed these to the class and the student was able to confidently talk to the class with a noticeable improvement in vocabulary and confidence.
