E12 Peer coaching

Linked to my inquiry based on learner agency I have also been involved in a voluntary inquiry into peer coaching facilitiated by Nga Pumanawa e Waru, a trust set up to improve learning outcomes for students in Rotorua.

After learning about the levels of questioning and student agency we have undertaken some in-class videoing which we then review and together with a colleague we critique the teaching and learning that took place. I have found this to be very interesting and engaging. 

One direct change that I have made is to use a tick chart for students during our daily independent spelling learning. I feel that this change will add a small piece of accountability to student's learning while they still maintain agency through choosing what learning best suits their needs. The students simply tick off the choice they made during the spelling rotations and at the end of the week we reflect on whether they made sensible choices. This also allows me more scope for being focused on the students I am teaching and not having to monitor the rest of the class.
