C10 Reaching out to whanau to engage them in their child's learning.

I regularly reach out the whanau of students in my class to engage them in conversations about their child's learning. This ranges from updates about learning, reminders, informing of incidents, and just touching base to keep school at the forefront of their minds.

I consciously make contact regularly so whanau are aware that my contact with them is a positive intervention. I use many ways to reach out to whanau, meeting them at the school gate, calling them, emailing or texting.  I like that I am able to contact the whanau by the way that best suits them whether it is digitally or in person.

Below are a small selection of the contact I have had with parents in my class.

Informing a parent that her child had done something really good at school - emphasising the positives.

Text conversation with a parent while on camp reassuring her that her son was having a good time and was safe.
Letting a parent know that her child had done really well in a school Assembly that she could not attend.

Email conversation with a priority learner's Mother, just letting her know that he had a good week.
Contacting a parent to inform her of her child's needs at school.
