B16 Data analysis and student Blogging

A learner in my class has successfully improved his writing using blogging as a tool to share and develop his writing. The Achievement objectives for level 3 writing in the New Zealand curriculum states that students should be writing for different purposes and audiences as well as communicating for a range of topics (The New Zealand Curriculum Online).

The students entered my class with very low confidence and was unable to write purposefully. I introduced him to the blogging platform and allowed him to regularly post onto our class blog.  By having an authentic audience he saw the need to publish quality writing and the feedback he got from his peers and family really helped him develop as an author.

The outcomes have been amazing in that he is now writing so well that he is expected to meet the National standard for writing at the end of year 6.

Click here to view some examples of his blogposts on our class blog.

Below are two examples of his blog posts the one on the left from 2017 and the right example from 2016. Note the extension of ideas and the ability to use more specific topic language.

In 2017 Brendon is continuing to blog and is now mentoring a younger students who is needing support to write purposefully.  This aligns with the New Zealand curriculum's principle of coherence, where learning pathways are identified and students transition through smoothly (New Zealand Curriculum, 2014).
